3. THERAPEUTIC CLASS

Methylxanthine Bronchodilator

4. INDICATIONS

Theophylline is indicated for the treatment of bronchospasm associated with:

  • Bronchial asthma

  • Chronic bronchitis

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Emphysema

  • Other reversible obstructive airway diseases

It acts by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle and helping improve airflow.

5. CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Hypersensitivity to theophylline or other xanthine derivatives.

  • Use with caution in patients with cardiac arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, epilepsy, hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcer disease, or hepatic impairment.

  • Caution is also advised in elderly patients and patients with acute febrile illness.

6. DRUG INTERACTIONS

Theophylline may interact with:

  • Macrolide antibiotics, including erythromycin and clarithromycin

  • Quinolone antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin

  • Rifampicin

  • Carbamazepine and phenytoin

  • Cimetidine

  • Other xanthine-containing medicines

  • Medicines affecting hepatic metabolism

Smoking and changes in smoking habits can alter theophylline blood concentrations.

Patients should inform their physician about all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medicines being taken.

7. ADMINISTRATION

For oral use only.

The dosage should be individualized according to age, body weight, clinical response, tolerability, and serum theophylline concentration.

Swallow the tablet with water. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Because theophylline has a narrow therapeutic range, monitoring of serum theophylline levels may be required, particularly when initiating treatment, adjusting the dose, or adding or discontinuing interacting medicines.

Seek medical attention if severe nausea, persistent vomiting, tremor, rapid or irregular heartbeat, or seizures occur.

8. STORAGE

Store below 25°C, protected from moisture and excessive heat.

Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Do not use after the expiry date stated on the package.
