INDICATIONS
Benzylpenicillin Sodium Injection is indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible penicillin-sensitive microorganisms.
It may be used in the treatment of:
• Streptococcal infections
• Pneumococcal infections caused by susceptible strains
• Meningitis caused by susceptible organisms
• Septicemia and bloodstream infections
• Infective endocarditis
• Pneumonia
• Skin and soft-tissue infections
• Erysipelas
• Other serious infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
Treatment should be guided by the susceptibility of the causative organism and applicable antimicrobial guidelines.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Benzylpenicillin Sodium is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to penicillin or any component of the formulation.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Particular consideration may be required with concomitant use of:
• Probenecid
• Methotrexate
• Anticoagulants such as warfarin
• Other β-lactam antibiotics
• Other medicines affecting renal function
The treating physician should review all concomitant medications before administration.
ADMINISTRATION
Benzylpenicillin Sodium Injection may be administered by intravenous or intramuscular route according to the approved product information.
The contents of the vial should be reconstituted with a suitable compatible diluent under appropriate aseptic conditions.
