Long-Acting Penicillin Antibiotic
INDICATIONS
Benzathine Penicillin G Injection is indicated for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by susceptible penicillin-sensitive microorganisms.
It may be used in the treatment of:
• Syphilis
• Yaws, pinta and other treponemal infections
• Streptococcal pharyngitis
• Certain streptococcal skin and soft-tissue infections
• Prevention of recurrent rheumatic fever
• Other susceptible infections where long-acting penicillin therapy is appropriate
Treatment should be guided by the susceptibility of the causative organism and applicable antimicrobial guidelines.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Benzathine Penicillin G is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to penicillin or any component of the formulation.
It must not be administered intravenously.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Particular consideration may be required with concomitant use of:
• Probenecid
• Anticoagulants such as warfarin
• Methotrexate
• Other antibiotics that may interfere with bactericidal activity
The treating physician should review all concomitant medications before administration.
ADMINISTRATION
Benzathine Penicillin G Injection is intended for deep intramuscular administration only.
The contents of the vial should be reconstituted with a suitable compatible diluent under appropriate aseptic conditions.
Administer by deep intramuscular injection according to the approved product information and institutional protocol.
